I believe that children need to know they are valued and possess potential. Children also need to develop trust and a bond with caregivers. It is also important that children have clear and consistent boundaries with a few well-defined established rules. Positive discipline and redirection works best when dealing with behavior issues. As a care giver power struggles must be chosen wisely and should be engaged in for primarily safety issues. Children do need choice and power, so it is important to give them that whenever possible. Encouragement as positive reinforcement works in most situations and teaching problem solving skills is vital to a child's development. When working with children the three R's work wonders reasonable, respectful and related. Children need to be actively engaged in the world around them in order for optimal learning to occur.
