Afternoon Caregiver

Do you enjoy spending time outside with adventurous children? Do you enjoy supporting learning through free play outdoors? Our family is looking for a kind and creative afternoon caregiver who will supervise four children, ages 5-8, as they play and explore on our small farm. When: 2-5 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays (with optional additional hours for date night or when kids are off from school) Where: Outside in our yard, forest, and pasture. We have a large garden, playset, and mud kitchen. On rainy days, you’ll have access to a covered porch and covered carport. Be attuned and responsive to the needs of children between 5 and 8 years of age via respectful, reciprocal interactions and relationships Develop trust with the children and family. Ensure that children are taking safety precautions (helmets while riding bikes, not picking up snakes, not rolling in poison ivy, paying attention when using tools, etc.) and guide them away from excessive risk. Allow risk-taking when the consequences are not life-threatening as kids try things at the edges of the capabilities. Allow them to learn from failure. Communicate with parents about wins and challenges as they arise. Think of this as helping us document learning and growth through stories, photos, or notes! Read to children and listen to them read. Facilitate clean up of toys and play areas as children finish or move to new ones. They should do the clean up, but will likely need direction and reminders! Usually, the children will be able to play together without active direction. Encourage and support this! Allow them to be bored so they can move through it and find creative solutions to problems. There will be days when the kids’ energy and attitudes are more ornery and the afternoon may go more smoothly with guidance. Have a few flexible project and activity ideas ready for those days. If you need supplies for these, let us know. If you have time/interest to tend the garden while kids are playing nearby, please feel free to help with weeds and harvest! Health and Wellness We will follow a sick child policy to help maintain a healthy environment for all children and adults. If any child or adult exhibits any of symptoms of contagious disease, we will not have afternoon care until they are symptom free for 3 days. We will also follow guidelines for hand washing, social distancing, and mask wearing.
